Born into a family of cooks, Cake Eater baker Sheela Namakkal’s palate was refined at a young age by both her father’s Indian cuisine and her mother’s Midwestern tastes. Sheela has been sharpening her skills in the food industry around Saint Paul and Minneapolis since age thirteen, but also made time to establish her Smart Business(wo)man credentials with years working in the financial sector. It was while pursuing her MBA that she cooked up the idea for Miel y Leche Catering, the successful baking business that has been selling cupcakes and other confections at various locations all over town since 2007. Beginning as a single recurring Saturday cupcake sale, in a matter of months Sheela’s business grew into a full-time cupcake production epicenter, distributing treats in partnership with a variety of Twin Cities businesses while simultaneously catering weddings and other special events on a weekly basis. Equal parts savory food lover and rock and roll singer, Sheela and her unique flavor combinations, quality ingredients, and creative craftsmanship have left fans all over town wondering when her cupcakes would find a permanent central home. After two years of searching for a location, Sheela partnered up with fellow rock and roll girl and local cook Emily Moore Harris to create Cake Eater Bakery. Their sense of community and fun are sure to bring the Seward neighborhood a great new place to snack and socialize!

Emily Moore Harris loves to feed people. Hailing from rural Vermont, Emily has been cooking at home since she was a child, and in professional kitchens since age 14. Her sense of adventure lead her to try out every job in the restaurant industry including serving, cooking, and managing cafes and restaurants on both coasts before settling in Minneapolis. After working in many more kitchens, and as a personal chef, Emily felt adventure call again. With her love of tasty, creative food and great coffee, it made sense to venture into the realm of small business. Adding management savvy to Sheela Namakkal’s award-worthy cupcakes, makes for an exciting partnership.
